Turkish plane to do observation flights over Russia

A Turkish plane built for observational purposes is set to fly through Russian skies between the dates of July 22 and 26 in line with the international airspace agreements, Doğan news agency reported.

The plane, which lacks any sort of weaponry and aims at fulfilling only observational purposes, will be controlled by a group of Turkish and American officials. The inspection of the applications available on board of the plane was conducted with the attendance of Russian inspectors, the report said.

The Treaty on Open Skies requires parties to allow observational flights to occur in their airspace. The treaty has 34 participants, including the Turkish and Russian states. The treaty has been in force since 2002, while initial signings go back as far as 1992.

  1. Russian military to make inspection flights over U.S....

MOSCOW, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Russian military inspectors will carry out inspection flights on Sunday over the United States under an international treaty on open skies, a security officer said.

The Russian inspectors, accompanied by U.S. specialists, will fly on board a Tu-154M/LK-1 aircraft between July 28 and Aug. 12 from the Travis Air Force Base in California and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, according to National Nuclear Risk Reduction Center head Sergei Ryzhkov.

A sensor suite, including optical panoramic and framing cameras, video cameras with real-time display, thermal infrared imaging sensors and an imaging radar, is to be used during the inspection.

The Open Skies Treaty, which took effect in January 2002, is aimed at promoting transparency of military forces and activities. It establishes a regime of unarmed aerial observation flights over the territories of its 34 member states.
