FYROM NEWS: Former FYROM's PM jailed for embezzlement

Vlado Buckovski Former FYROM's PM
F.Y.R.O.M.- SKOPJE: An appeal court in FYROM upheld on Monday the conviction of former prime minister Vlado Buckovski for embezzlement and corruption, but reduced his sentence by six months.

The court in Skopje found Buckovski guilty of embezzling two million euros (2.6 million dollars) through a scam involving the purchase of spare parts for T-55 tanks for the FYROM's army at inflated prices, dating back to 2001-2002 when he served as defence minister.

Buckovski had already been sentenced to three-and-a-half years by a lower court in 2008, which was reduced to three years on Monday. The court did not offer an explanation for that decision.

Former army chief of staff Metodij Stamboliski was sentenced to three years in prison, and three other officials were given sentences ranging from two to three years, unchanged from their prior convictions.

Buckovski served twice as a defence minister in the Balkan country, in 2001 and from 2002 to 2004. He served as prime minister between 2004 and 2006.
