A Cypriot artist positioned 20 plaster toilets outside the country's central bank Monday to protest the state of the banking system and the damage it has done to the economy.

Andreas Efstathiou placed the toilets, which also resemble tombstones, in two neat rows outside the gates of Cyprus' central bank in Nicosia.
"I am using visual art to conduct a visual protest," the 49-year-old said. "It is a protest against the harm inflicted on Cyprus."

To secure a 23-billion-euro (30.5-billion-dollar) bailout, Cyprus was forced to wind up one major bank, Laiki, and write off a large portion of secured debt and uninsured deposits in its largest bank, the Bank of Cyprus.

Uninsured savers at the Bank of Cyprus stand to lose up to 60 per cent of their deposits under the terms of the bailout, agreed to with the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund in March.
