Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov
elaborated the reason for preparing the document saying that there was
a need to permanently determine Bulgaria's interests and positions with
regard to its neighbours following five years of EU membership and eight
years of NATO membership.
"Bulgaria is open toward its neighbours and supports
the enlargement of the European Union, but it won't allow anyone to
interfere into its history and identity. It is not the politicians' job
to try and interpret history. All attempts have led to a crash and it is
more important to look ahead," FM Mladenov said at a government
session.
Media in Bulgaria report on Thursday that the
government have passed a proposal, which will be submitted in the
Parliament, urging a document to be adopted that lays down the
foundations of Bulgaria's policy towards its neighbours (FYROM).
Mladenov also said the document should contain some 'red lines' that cannot be crossed in bilateral relations.
The issue involving the history of FYROM was
mentioned as one of the red lines toward the FYROM, however it wasn't
directly pointed out by the Bulgarian minister.
Mladenov announced that a regular meeting with ambassadors from Balkan countries will be held next week. fyromonline.eu
