Four dead in Kentucky shooting

A gunman killed at least four people and injured eight others in a shooting in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, on Monday. The shooter opened fire on a bank before being killed on the scene.

The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) said that its officers responded to an “active aggressor” at a bank near the iconic Slugger Field baseball stadium on Monday morning. Speaking at a press conference after the incident, LMPD Deputy Chief Paul Humphrey said that at least four people were killed in the shooting and eight others were injured.

A police spokesman initially said that five people had been killed in the shooting, before the number was revised down to four. Two police officers were among the wounded, Humphrey said.

The suspect was still firing when officers arrived on the scene, Humphrey said. The suspect died in a shootout with police, the deputy chief continued, adding that the department is still investigating whether an officer killed him or he took his own life.

Humphrey described the shooter as a “lone gunman” who “did have a connection to the bank.”

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear offered condolences to the victims and their families, telling reporters that two of his close friends were killed in the shooting, while a third was injured.
