The bridge linking the Russian city of Blagoveshchensk to the Chinese city of Heihe across the Amur river – known in China as Heilongjiang – is just over one kilometre long and cost 19 billion roubles ($342m), Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency reported.
Amid a firework display, freight trucks from both ends crossed the two-lane bridge that was festooned with flags in the colours of both countries, video footage of the opening showed.
Russian authorities said the bridge would bring Moscow and Beijing closer together by boosting trade after they announced a “no limits” partnership in February, shortly before President Vladimir Putin sent his forces into Ukraine.
The daily throughput of the first road bridge between Russia and China opened on Friday can be over 600 trucks, the press service of the government of the Amur Region said.
ReplyDelete"Bridge opening will have a major effect for development of trade and economic ties between Russia and China. More than 600 trucks can go across the bridge every day. Modern crossing points will be able to support movement of up to 4 mln tonnes of cargo and 2 mln passengers annually overtime. Only cargo traffic will be implemented at the first stage," regional governor Vasily Orlov said.
First trucks went across the cross-border bridge between Russia and China earlier on Friday.
