Death toll in Philippines from Typhoon Rai rises to 75 - China.org.cn

Typhoon Rai

The death toll from Typhoon Rai that battered the Philippines earlier this week has climbed to at least 75, local officials said Sunday.

The number of deaths is likely to rise as data gathering from the field continues in the wake of the strongest typhoon to hit the country this year.

The officials said 49 died in Bohol province, six in Southern Leyte province in the central Philippines, and 10 in Dinagat Islands in the southern Philippines.

On Saturday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said it received reports of 31 deaths in central and southern Philippines and one missing. The NDRRMC has yet to update its death tally.

Communications are still down in typhoon-ravaged areas, making it difficult for the NDRRMC to contact its regional and provincial agencies.

  1. The death toll from the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines this year has risen to 75, official tallies showed on Sunday, as the government struggles to deliver emergency food aid to the most devastated areas of the country.

More than 300,000 people fled their homes and beachfront resorts as Typhoon Rai ravaged the southern and central regions of the archipelago.

The storm ripped off roofs and toppled concrete power poles while knocking out communications and electricity, making it difficult to receive updates from some areas.

    1. More than 100 people are now thought to have died after a devastating storm struck the Philippines on Thursday.

Super Typhoon Rai - with winds of about 195km/h (120mph) - sent some 300,000 people running for safety when it hit the country's south-eastern islands.

Rescue teams have described scenes of "complete carnage".

But establishing the scale of the losses has proved difficult, as communication to a number of areas has been cut off.

At least 108 deaths have been reported, according to AFP news agency, with fears landslides and flooding may have claimed more lives. The Associated Press puts the toll at 112 or more.....BBC
