US lawmaker contracts coronavirus after vaccination - TV - TASS

A member of the House of Representatives of the US Congress, Stephen Lynch, contracted novel coronavirus after receiving two doses of a vaccine against it, CNN reported citing the congressman’s respresentatives.

Lynch was tested for novel coronavirus on Friday, and his result was positive. Prior to that, one of his subordinates was also diagnosed with the infection. The congressman has so far displayed no symptoms of the illness. He intends to self-isolate and to continue to work remotely.

According to the congressman’s respresentatives, he received the second dose of the coronavirus vaccine ahead of US President Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20. Lynch was inoculated with a vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.

According to the article, although a vaccine prevents COVID-19 - an illness caused by the novel coronavirus - it does not necessary protect a person from becoming infected with it. US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that post-vaccination immunity takes several weeks to be formed.

According to the US-based Johns Hopkins University, which relies on data from international organizations, federal and local authorities, about 26 million coronavirus cases and over 439,300 deaths have been registered in the United States so far, making it the hardest-hit country worldwide both in terms of cases and fatalities.
