Direct Confrontation Growing More Likely between Syrian Troops, SDF Near Border with Iraq

The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have approached the Syrian Army troops' positions near the border with Iraq, intensifying the possibility of direct confrontation with the pro-government forces in Deir Ezzur province, a Kurdish media outlet reported on Sunday.

The Kurdish-language Hawar news reported that the SDF have advanced 40 km Eastward from the al-Tanak oilfield and have reached Deir Ezzur's border with Iraq.

The Hawar news added that the SDF have deployed at a distance only 9 km away from the army-controlled town of Albu Kamal, intensifying the possibility of direct confrontation between the SDF and the army men that are advancing in Albu Kamal's countryside after they captured the town a couple of days ago.

Dissident-affiliated websites reported earlier this month that the ISIL terrorist group handed over Syria's second largest oilfield in Deir Ezzur province to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) within the framework of an agreement.

The websites reported that the ISIL delivered control of al-Tanak oilfield, Syria's second largest oilfield, to the SDF without any clashes in line with an agreement tat envisages surrendering their positions to the US-back forces.

The oilfield is located 35km East of Deir Ezzur city.
