Kurdistan's military Peshmerga forces and an Iraqi pro-government Shiite militia have been engaged in intense clashes in the southern part of the disputed city of Kirkuk in recent hours, officials from both parties told EFE on Saturday.

Jabar Yawar, the secretary general of the Kurdish Peshmerga Forces, said unknown gunmen opened fire on the headquarters of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Friday night in Tuz Khurmatu, 70 kilometers (43 miles) south of Kirkuk.
