Avigdor Lieberman: Israel trying to stop transfer of weapons to Hezbollah

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Wednesday that Israel was working to prevent Shiite terror group Hezbollah from smuggling weapons of mass destruction from Syria to its headquarters in Lebanon.

"We are working primarily to protect the security of our citizens and defend our sovereignty and we are trying to prevent the smuggling of sophisticated weapons, military equipment and weapons of mass destruction from Syria to Hezbollah," he said during a meeting with EU ambassadors in Israel.

Lieberman's comments came after the Syrian army said earlier in the day that Israel had fired missiles at a Syrian military airbase before dawn on Wednesday.

The army made the claims hours after Arabic-language media outlets said a series of explosions had occurred in the suburbs of Damascus.

Some earlier reports said airstrikes targeting a weapons convoy intended for the Lebanese Shiite terror group Hezbollah, which is allied with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Iran.

Pro-Hezbollah media outlets said the airstrikes caused a series of explosions that lasted for 30 minutes.

The Syrian military's statement said the missiles were fired from Israeli territory, suggesting that ground-to-ground missiles were used.
