At least 108 dead, 114 injured in northern India train accident

At least 108 people were killed and 114 were injured on Sunday when a train derailed in northern India.

The accident took place early Sunday near the town of Pukhrayan _ located in the Kanpur district, 470 kilometers (292 miles) to the east of New Delhi _ and has claimed at least 108 lives, the district's police deputy commissioner, Pavitra Mohan Tripathi, told EFE.

According to Tripathi, efforts to identify the corpses have been hampered by the extreme disfigurement many victims' bodies suffered after being crushed by the carriages that collided following the derailment.

Meanwhile, the government of the state of Uttar Pradesh posted on its official Twitter account the revised number of those injured in the accident, saying that at least 114 people had been hospitalized.

A spokesman for the National Disaster Response Force deployed at the site, Anil Shekhawat, told EFE that 14 carriages were affected by the incident.
