Ruling Islamist party wins Moroccan legislative elections

An Islamist party has won Friday's legislative elections in Morocco, earning 125 out of the 395 seats in the Moroccan Assembly of Representatives, according to data provided by the Interior Ministry.

The governing Justice and Development Party (PJD) came in first place by winning a majority of electoral districts (98 out of 305) while also heading the so-called "national list" reserved for women and candidates under the age of 40, seizing 27 out of the 90 seats on the list.

The Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), the PJD's main rival, came in second, winning 81 electoral districts and 21 seats in the nationwide constituency, for a total of 102 members represented in the lower house of Parliament.

Far behind came Istiqlal _ Morocco's historically-dominant conservative and monarchist party _ with a total of 46 seats, 11 of which were elected from the national list.

  • Istiqlal had 60 deputies in the previous legislature, with Friday's electoral results showing a steady decline in the party's influence and political power.

The rest of the seats were earned by the liberal-royalist National Rally of Independents (37 seats), the rural-monarchist Popular Movement (27), the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (20), the Constitutional Union (19) and the Party of Progress and Socialism (12).

Morocco's Constitution stipulates that King Mohammed VI must now call on the most-voted party to form a government, which means the PJD is set to attempt a governing coalition with other parties so that it can muster the 198 votes required for a comfortable absolute majority.
