Turkey's Defence Minister Fikri Isik told his NATO colleagues at a dinner on Wednesday that Ankara no longer saw a need for the mission to continue beyond the end of December, according to two people briefed on the exchanges.

On Thursday, Isik told reporters in Brussels: "This was a temporary mission, and the goal has been reached in this temporary mission. There is no need to extend it further." Germany's defence minister, Ursula von der Leyen, whose country currently leads the maritime mission, said the Aegean mission was secure until Dec. 31.
