Lebanon chooses new president after 2 years of power vacuum

The Lebanese Parliament on Monday elected a former general as president almost two and a half years after the previous president left his post.

Michel Aoun was elected in the second round of voting with the support of 83 representatives of the 127 that attended a chaotic session, the 46th held to select a new head of state.

Another 36 lawmakers abstained and eight voted blank.

In his investiture speech, the former general pressed for the elaboration of just electoral laws and the liberation of all territories occupied by Israel, insisting that Tel Aviv presented the greatest threat against Lebanon.

Aoun, who leads the main Christian block, won the votes from all his group members, as well as all representatives from former Prime Minister Saad Hariri's Future Movement and the Progressive Socialist Party.

Nabih Berri, the Parliamentary speaker, congratulated Aoun and said he had been chosen to guide the Lebanese ship in the face of the challenges that threaten it.

He urged him to strengthen the military and security forces.

Until now, an investiture had been blocked by fights between parliamentary groups and a boycott by the pro-Syrian Hezbollah-led coalition, which eventually backed Aoun.

According to the way power is organized in Lebanon, the head of state must be a Maronite Christian, the president of the government a Sunni Muslim and the Parliamentary speaker a Shiite.
