Operations aimed at retaking the Iraqi city of Mosul from the so-called Islamic State group have begun.
Mosul is Iraq's second largest city and the last urban stronghold of the IS "fighters" in the country.
The military campaign was announced by the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on state television last night.
The offensive involves the Iraqi military, Kurdish Peshmerga and allied forces and is backed by a US-led coalition.
US Defence Secretary Ash Carter said the US stood ready to support Iraq in what he called "the difficult fight ahead".
