British FM arrives in Gaziantep to visit Syrian refugees

British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson arrived in the southeastern province of Gaziantep on Sept. 26 as a part of his two-day trip to Turkey to visit Syrian refugees, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

Departing from Istanbul in a private jet, Johnson will make inspections at the container city in the border province which hosts the largest number of Syrian refugees who fled the civil war in their home country.

The British minister was greeted by Gaziantep Airport officials as security personnel took extensive security measures around the airport.

Johnson had arrived in Turkey on Sept. 25 to express solidarity after the failed coup attempt of July 15.

He was scheduled to meet President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, as well as his Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and EU Affairs Minister Ömer Çelik, during his visit.

The former London mayor’s visit to the country marks the first since he was sworn in as foreign minister in July.

Gaziantep was recently hit by an Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) suicide bomb attack targeting a street wedding, which claimed 57 lives, mostly children, and wounded more than 90.
