Referendum against President Nicolas Maduro : After success Venezuelan opposition mobilizes for next stage

The Venezuelan opposition celebrated today the National Electoral Council's (CNE) approval of the first step in a campaign to activate the recall referendum against President Nicolas Maduro and started the mobilization this week to press for the next stage of the process, when the opposition will need the support of at least 4 million people.

The CNE announced today that the first phase to activate the recall of Venezuelan President has completed, after one percent of voter signatures, which is equivalent to approximately 200,000 supports, were validated.

"Conclusion, one percent exceeded. We are going for 20 percent now and the country will go for it (...) Wednesday and Thursday, mobilizations in all the states, the country, prepare for 20 percent," the main promoter of the referendum and two-time presidential candidate Henrique Capriles tweeted on his Twitter account.

  • The CNE, however, has not yet announced the date for the collection of four million signatures and requested to investigate some irregularities in the first phase, the stage which Chavez denounced as "the most gigantic electoral fraud" committed in the political and electoral history of the country.

The ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) made a request last week to the CNE to cancel the registration of the opposition alliance Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) as a party for alleged fraud, and today the PSUV presented another document to the CNE, in which it pointed out that there were more than 8,600 lawsuits in 23 states against the request for the recall referendum.

Despite this, the opposition celebrated the CNE announcement on social networks and pointed out that "only one step remains" in their attempt to recall the Venezuelan head of state.
