3 killed, more than 20 injured, as explosions rock southern Thailand

Three people were killed and more than 20 injured as explosions hit Thailand's southern provinces on Thursday and Friday, police said.

Two blasts happened on Friday at around 8 a.m. in Surat Thani Province, leaving one person dead and three injured.

The first explosion happened in front of the Marine Police Division office in Surat Thani city, while the second occurred in front of the city's police station.

Thai police have confirmed that two more bombs have gone off in another city, killing one person, in the latest in a string of blasts, including two in the seaside resort town of Hua Hin that killed one and wounded nearly 20 more people - half of them foreigners.

It was not clear who was behind the attacks. But the timing suggested it could have been carried out by opponents of the nation's ruling junta, whose leadership last weekend organized a successful referendum on new constitution that critics say will bolster the military's power for years to come.
