A British lawmaker from the opposition Labour Party was shot and fatally wounded in her constituency in northern England on Thursday, throwing campaigning for the referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union into disarray just a week before the crucial vote.
Jo Cox, 41, a mother of two, was left bleeding on the pavement after the incident in Birstall in Yorkshire shortly before 1 PM. She was hospitalized in critical condition and died a few hours later.
In the immediate aftermath of the attack, the anti-Brexit 'Stronger in Europe' camp declared that it was suspending campaigning because of the attack, while a spokesman for the rival Vote Leave group said their 'battle bus' was returning to headquarters.
Cox was a prominent supporter of the Remain campaign....
