Killer US blizzard heading to UK - Winter Storm Jonas

MILLIONS of Americans are digging themselves out after a mammoth blizzard with hurricane-force winds and record snowfall brought much of the East Coast to an icy standstill.

As travel bans were lifted in New York City and Baltimore early Sunday morning, the Met Office warned that the killer storm is set to hit the UK on Tuesday.

However instead of the heavy snow which battered the US, the UK faces the prospect of driving rain and serious floods.

“An active cold front is expected to become slow-moving across Wales, northwest England and south and west Scotland through Tuesday, and into Wednesday, before clearing to the south on Wednesday afternoon,” a Met spokeswoman said.

“Many parts of the warning area could see 50-100 mm of rain, while the most exposed upland parts of north Wales, northwest England and southwest Scotland could see 150-200 mm.

“As such, there is the potential for river flooding, and also standing water on roads. Strong and gusty southwest winds will also develop.”.......http://www.news.com.au
