Gunmen attack northwest Pakistan university campus

More than 20 people have been killed in a gun and bomb attack on a university in northwestern Pakistan, officials told AFP Wednesday.

Police chief Saeed Wazir told AFP the operation had ended and security forces were clearing the area, with most of the student victims shot dead at a hostel for boys on the campus, and that at least 21 people had been killed.

"More than 30 others including students, staff and security guards were wounded," he added.

Police, soldiers and special forces swarmed the university from the ground and the air in a bid to shut down the assault, as television images showed female students running for their lives.

FRANCE 24 Pakistan correspondent Taha Siddiqui said local media reported that one professor had been killed in the attack.

“We’re getting reports from inside the school that most of the militants were going from classroom to classroom, similar to the Peshawar attack back in December 2014,” in which 141 people were killed by Taliban gunmen, Siddiqui said.

Military spokesman Major General Asim Bajwa said on Twitter that four attackers had been killed.

"Update: Snipers killed 2 more terrorists on roof top, total Terrorist killed so far 4. All buildings (and) roof top taken over by Army," he wrote earlier.
