Ukraine to raise tariffs for Russian gas transit

Ukraine plans to raise the fees for Russian natural gas transit via its territory by half, the country's Energy Minister Volodymyr Demchyshyn said here Tuesday.

"The tariffs would be raised to about 4.5 U.S. dollars per 100 kilometers. That is around 50 percent higher than before," Demchyshyn told a media conference.

He said that the transit fees will be hiked after Kiev introduces the new tariff formation scheme, which is tied to Ukraine's newly-adopted energy law, rather than a contract between Ukraine's state-run energy firm Naftogaz and Russia's gas-giant Gazprom.

Naftogaz plans to hold negotiations with Gazprom over amending the contract, which expires in 2019, Demchyshyn said, adding that the talks are going to be "difficult."

Last year, Russian gas transit rate through the Ukrainian territory was about 2.7 dollars per 100 km.
