US Vice President Plans January Visit to Turkey for Talks With Erdogan

US Vice President Joe Biden will pay a visit to Turkey in January following his participation in the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Office of the Vice President announced on Wednesday.

Biden will hold talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu during his time in Ankara, The Hill newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Turkey, a NATO member for 60 years, is claimed by the Obama administration as a key partner in the fight against Daesh, which is outlawed in Russia.

The US government has systematically denied or tried to discredit reports that the Erdogan government permits Daesh to earn most of its annual oil revenue through illegal exports transported through Turkish territory in defiance of international sanctions.

Turkey also provoked tensions between NATO and Russia when its air force shot down a Russian Sukhoi Su-24 bomber conducting strikes against Islamic State targets on November 24.
