In the US, at least eight people died on Saturday night after multiple tornadoes hit northern Texas. The incidents brought the death toll to 25 from a week of severe storms that have crossed the southern US.
Further north, however, locals in New York enjoyed unseasonal warmth over the Christmas break, with temperatures peaking at 22C on Christmas Eve and 19C on Christmas Day - both records.
In South America, more than 150,000 people were forced from their homes over the Christmas holiday after the worst flooding in more than 50 years hit Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.
In the UK, the government was holding emergency talks on Sunday as flooding in northern England forced hundreds of people to leave their homes, including in the historic tourist destination of York.
In China, more than 100 million people across China were warned to stay indoors in Beijing and surrounding regions because of severe smog.

Le Premier ministre britannique David Cameron a annoncé dimanche le déploiement de troupes supplémentaires pour venir en aide aux populations affectées par les inondations qui ont atteint un niveau "sans précédent" dans le nord de l'Angleterre...
ReplyDelete"Je viens juste de présider une réunion (de crise) sur ces inondations sans précédent", a déclaré sur Twitter le chef de l'exécutif britannique.
"Des troupes supplémentaires vont être déployées", a-t-il assuré, alors qu'une unité du régiment du duc de Lancaster participe déjà, aux côtés des autorités locales et de volontaires de la Croix Rouge, aux opérations d'évacuation et de lutte contre les inondations. David Cameron a également indiqué que l'ensemble du dispositif anti-inondations, critiqué ces dernières semaines, serait réévalué. "Les barrières anti-inondations, permanentes comme provisoires, ont joué un rôle clef, mais il est clair que dans certains cas, elles ont été dépassées, et nous devons voir s'il faut faire quelque chose de plus", a-t-il dit sur la BBC.

Dozens dead in US Christmas storms...
ReplyDeleteAt least 43 people have been killed over the past five days by severe storms across southern and western parts of the United States.
Flash floods, tornadoes and now snow have destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses and snarled transport links.
The National Weather Service has issued tornado warnings for Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Mississippi.
The governors of Missouri, Oklahoma, and New Mexico have declared states of emergency.
In Illinois, three adults and two children were swept away in their car by the flood waters. In Texas, at least 11 people were killed by powerful tornadoes with winds of up to 200 miles an hour (300kph).....BBC
