Refugee arrivals in Austria continues to slow

The number of refugees arriving in Austria has continued to slow significantly over the first few days of December, local media reported Friday.

In the first three days of November, there was an average of over 6,000 arrivals per day. Towards the end of the month, the stream of refugees cross into Austria had slowed significantly.

Local media said the slowdown is explained by the arrival of weather and the introduction of tougher border crossing restrictions in countries such as FYROM [***] and other Balkan nations.

Police said there are presently very few arrivals in the border town of Spielfeld in the state of Styria, where thousands of refugees once arrived each day leading to overcrowding and chaotic scenes.

Authorities said there have however been 8,700 refugee arrivals in the state of Carinithia since the beginning of December, with 1,300 also expected on Friday, APA reported.

These refugees are to be transported onward to Germany, their main destination.
