Turkish Military Attache Summoned to Russian MoD Over Su-24

Turkey’s military attache in Moscow has been summoned to the Russian Defense Ministry over the downing of the Russian Su-24 Fencer attack jet downed over Syria by Turkish forces, the Russian Defense Ministry said Tuesday.

Earlier on Tuesday, an Su-24 was downed by an air-to-air missile in Syria near the Turkish border by the Turkish Air Force while carrying out precision strikes against terrorists in northern Syria.

  • Downing of Su-24 'Will Have Serious Consequences' for Russia-Turkey Ties

Tragedy with Russian Su-24 downed in Syria to have serious consequences for Moscow-Ankara relations, Vladimir Putin stated.

The Russian president underscored that "either way, our pilots and our plane were not posing a threat to the Republic of Turkey."

“This tragic event will have serious consequences for Russian-Turkish relations. We have always regarded Turkey not only as a close neighbor, but also as a friendly state. I don’t know who needed what was done today, but we didn’t in any case,” Putin said during a meeting with Jordanian King Abdullah II in Sochi.

Russia's president stated that the incident with Su-24 in Syria is beyond regular war against terrorism.

"Instead of contacting us immediately Turkey addressed their  NATO partners  — as if it was us who downed their plane, not vice versa," Putin said.

"Our jet fell six kilometers away from the border, within Syrian arispace."

The Russian Su-24 was directly tasked with the fight against the Islamic State group, carrying out preventative airstrikes against terrorists, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday.

"They were carrying out an operation to combat IS. Northern Latakia is a mountainous region where militants are gathered, mostly natives of the Russian Federation. In this sense, they were carrying out their direct task of preventative strikes against terrorists who could return to Russia at any time. These are, of course, people who must be considered international terrorists," Putin said at a meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah II.

  1. Czech President Milos Zeman denounced on Tuesday Turkey’s actions over the situation around the Russian Sukhoi Su-34 bomber that crashed in Syria....

"Sometimes, a suspicion is voiced that Turkey is informally interacting with the Islamic State. Considering that the Russian air group is fighting against the IS, then, of course, the attack [which caused the aircraft’s crash] is an extremely radical measure. It will only make the atmosphere worse," the head of the Czech Republic said....................http://tass.ru/en/world/838829

  2. Turkey downing of Russia jet 'stab in the back' - Putin...

Russian President Vladimir Putin has bitterly condemned the downing of a Russian jet on the Turkey-Syria border.

He described it as a "stab in the back" committed by "accomplices of terrorists".

Turkey says its jets shot at the plane after warning that it was violating Turkish airspace. But Moscow says it never strayed from Syrian airspace.

Nato is to hold an extraordinary meeting to discuss the incident at Turkey's request.

Mr Putin warned there would be "serious consequences" for Moscow's relations with Turkey.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said he was cancelling his visit to Turkey, where he was due on Wednesday, over the incident.

He also advised Russians not to visit Turkey and said the threat of terrorism there was the no less than in Egypt, where a bomb attack brought down a Russian passenger plane last month..........BBC
