Mystery light in southern California confirmed as missile test

A mystery light that streaked across the night sky in southern California on Saturday sparked various speculations, and was confirmed to be a Navy missile test.

Local law agencies and media were flooded with calls around 6:00 p.m. local time (1400 GMT) from people reporting seeing an object with strong blue-green light in the dark sky, speculating it as a comet, a UFO or even a nuclear bomb.

Commander Ryan Perry with the Navy's Third Fleet later clarified in a statement that it was the Navy Strategic Systems Programs' scheduled Trident II missile test flight from the USS Kentucky, an Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine.

Perry said that the missile was not armed and the Strategic Systems Programs does not routinely announce missile testing. Information regarding the test launch of such missiles is classified prior to the launch.

Nighttime flights in Los Angeles International Airport will have to avoid flying over the test area northwest of Los Angeles next week.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said that military airspace over that area was activated on Friday night and will remain active next week.
