Deadly suicide attack rocks southern Beirut

Two explosions in a predominantly Shia residential area of southern Beirut have killed at least 37 people and injured at least 181, according to the Lebanese Red Cross.

The explosions took place in the Ain el Sikkeh area, next to the Burj el-Barajneh Palestinian refugee camp.

The area, located off a main highway leading to Beirut's airport, is a well-known commercial and residential area in the capital's southern suburbs.

Witnesses said that there were only minutes between the two blasts.

"I was standing outside my store with my friend when the first explosion happened," one resident, who was injured in the explosion, told Al Jazeera.

"He was martyred in the explosion. As I was trying to move him, the second explosion happened."

Much of southern Beirut is a Hezbollah stronghold, which witnessed a string of deadly suicide explosions in 2014.

Residents, who talked to Al Jazeera, expressed shock that such deadly explosions were taking place in the southern suburbs again.

They said that they were concerned that there will be a return of the tense period of insecurity in which they lived under during the last string of bombings.

Security forces have urged residents in the area to stay away from the targeted sites.

Coffee shops and stores suffered extensive damage from the two blasts.

  1. Twin suicide bombings rocked a busy shopping street in a Hezbollah stronghold of Beirut Thursday, killing 41 people and wounding more than 200, according to Lebanese officials.

Lebanese police officials said two men on foot set off suicide vests in front of a shopping centre in the mainly Shiite Burj al-Barajneh area of the Lebanese capital.

The Islamic State (IS) group, who is fighting Hezbollah militants in war-torn Syria, claimed responsibility for the attacks. In a statement posted on Twitter by its supporters, the group said its members blew up a bike loaded with explosives in a Burj al-Barajneh street and when people gathered, a suicide bomber blew himself up.

However a Lebanese security official said the first suicide attacker detonated his explosive vest outside a Shiite mosque minutes before a second attacker blew himself up inside a nearby bakery.............http://www.france24.com/en/20151112-several-wounded-two-blasts-dahieh-southern-beirut-lebanon-hezbollah

  3. US condemns 'horrific terrorist attacks' in Beirut...

The White House condemned the "horrific terrorist" twin bomb blasts claimed by the Islamic State extremist group that killed 41 people in Beirut on Thursday.

"Such acts of terror only reinforce our commitment to support the institutions of the Lebanese state, including the security services, to ensure a stable, sovereign, and secure Lebanon," National Security Council spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.

The attack on a busy shopping street in a Beirut stronghold of the Shiite movement Hezbollah was the worst such assault in years.

The army said the blasts were carried out by two suicide bombers and that the body of a third, who had failed to detonate his explosive device, had been found at the scene of the second explosion.

"The United States condemns in the strongest terms today's horrific terrorist attacks in Beirut, Lebanon that killed dozens and wounded hundreds more," said Price...............http://www.i24news.tv/en/news/international/middle-east/92259-151112-eight-dead-in-suicide-bombings-in-beirut-hezbollah-bastion
