Russia announces beginning of mission in Syria "of courtesy" (Putin)

Russia has announced beginning of the mission in Syria of courtesy and reason, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin said in an interview with Rossiya-1 television broadcaster on Sunday.


"We have never ever been notified of similar missions, but we have chosen to do so. Of courtesy and reason, of the intention to demonstrate we are open for joint efforts," he said.

"The easiest option would be to join our efforts and thus to legalise own actions in the Syrian territory, as since we have a mandate from the official authorities, the easiest would be to join us and to work under that mandate," he said. "But, if you know better than we the situation in the territory - you have been there for over a year, illegally, but still there, so if you know better, which I doubt, but still, then why not give targets to us, we shall work on them."

"They refused. Said: no, we are not going to work at that level. I wonder why; if they, really, know better and want to fight terrorism, then give the places to us where the terrorists are sheltering, where their command centres are, their ammunition depots, weapons and equipment. Give the targets to us, what can be easier? But as yet, unfortunately, we have not approached that level of cooperation. But, once again, the first steps in establishment of contacts at the military level have been made already," the president said.
