France has conducted its second set of airstrikes against Islamic State positions in Syria, French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Friday.
"French Rafale planes dropped bombs on an [Islamic State ] training facility," Mr Le Drian told a local radio station, adding that more strikes would follow. Mr Le Drian explained that the strikes, executed in the night between Thursday and Friday, were to stop Islamic State combatants carrying out attacks in Europe.
France long resisted carrying out airstrikes in Syria for fear of inadvertently strengthening the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
It first carried out airstrikes in the country last month, showing that concerns over Islamic State are beginning to outweigh its opposition to Mr Assad.
The latest French attack also follow Russia's direct military involvement in Syria in support of Mr Assad's regime.
Mr Le Drian claimed that "80 to 90 per cent" of Russian strikes in Syria weren't targeting the Islamic State: "They're primarily aiming to secure Bashar al-Assad's safety," he said.
