Albanian population living in extreme poverty increases (World Bank)

The number of people living in extreme poverty in Albania tripled from 2008 to 2012, according to the World Bank.

The World Bank classifies as individuals in extreme poverty those who live with less than 1.9 US dollars a day, based on the buying power standard.

Albanian Daily News quoted the bank's figures as saying there were 10,900 people living beneath this level in 2008, but by the end of 2012, after four years of weak economic growth, this number reached 30,900, accounting for 1.06 percent of the entire population.

Though 1.06 percent seems to be a low figure, data shows that most of the individuals above the 1.9-dollar level are those who just exceed this limit narrowly, which leaves them in constant danger to fall in extreme poverty.

According to the bank, Albania remains the most threatened country among all similar economies in the region. 

• The World Bank said 32.1 percent of the population in Albania live with less than 5 dollars a day.

The World Bank's data suggests that Albania's development has been in a stalemate since 2008 and some indicators have even deteriorated.
