Airstrike Kills Over 20 at Yemen Wedding Party

At least 23 people attending a wedding party in Yemen were killed by an airstrike carried out by the Saudi-led military coalition, The New York Times reports citing witnesses and local medical workers.

The airstrike, the second one to hit a wedding in Yemen in just over a week, occurred in Dhamar province, about 50 miles south of the country’s capital Sanaa, according to the newspaper.

At least one of the three sons who were to be married in a joint ceremony on Wednesday was killed in the airstrike, The New York Times said citing a relative present at the wedding.

The death toll from the strike could surpass 23 as more bodies remain under the rubble of the house where the wedding ceremony took place, Safwan al-Ansi, the chief of the emergency department at the Dhamar health office, said as cited by the newspaper on Wednesday.

Yemen has been engulfed in a military conflict between the government and Shiite Houthi rebels, the country’s main opposition force that made the country’s government resign in January.

A coalition of Arab states, led by Saudi Arabia, has been launching airstrikes in Yemen at the request of president Hadi since March, in an attempt to push Houthis out of areas they have come to control.

On September 28 coalition planes bombed wedding tents in the southwestern Yemeni village of Wahijah, near the port of Mocha (Mokha) on the Red Sea coast, killing dozens of people, including eight children.

According to the United Nations, hundreds of civilians have been killed in Yemen in the course of the conflict and around 80 percent of the country’s population are currently in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.

  1. Several killed in deadly strike on Yemen wedding party ...

At least 13 people were killed and 38 others wounded in the bombing of a wedding in a rebel-held Yemeni town, a medical source said Thursday, as witnesses accused the Saudi-led coalition of being behind the attack.

The bombing targeted a house hosting a wedding celebration in Sanban, in Dhamar province, some 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of Sanaa, medics and witnesses said.

"The hospital of Dhamar has received 13 bodies and 38 wounded people following the bombing of a house where dozens were celebrating a wedding," the medical source told AFP, on condition of anonymity.

The medic did not specify the source of the bombing, but witnesses said it was an air strike by a pro-government coalition that has been targeting rebel targets since March.

The nine-member, Saudi-led coalition intervened in support of Yemeni President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi after Iran-backed Huthi rebels overran the capital Sanaa last year.

"Coalition warplanes launched the attack. The house got completely destroyed," said witness and local resident Taha al-Zuba.

"Warplanes were heard in the area ahead of the attack."............http://www.france24.com/en/20151008-yemen-saudi-coalition-bombing-wedding-attack

The airstrike hit the house of a tribal leader who allegedly supports the Shiite Houthi group in Sanaban village in Dhamar province, about 100 km southeast of the capital Sanaa.

Medics and rescuers said 26 people at the wedding ceremony were killed, including seven children, while more than 40 others were wounded, including 15 children and 17 women.

It was the second airstrike on a wedding party in Yemen in over a week.
