Refugee Influx in Greece Nears 108,000 in August

The number of refugees picked up after coming ashore in Greece neared 108,000 in August alone, the Greek Coast Guard said.

Approximately 230,000 undocumented immigrants have arrived in Greece over the previous eight months, according to the country's Alternate Shipping Minister Christos Zois.

The Greek Coast Guard only counts those migrants that have been detained illegally crossing the border, via smuggler boats and other pathways. The Mediterranean country reported that 53 human traffickers were detained last month.

Greece has been on the forefront of the migrant crisis in Europe. Tens of thousands of migrants and refugees have been arriving on the Greek coast in an attempt to travel deeper into the European Union.

Earlier this week, the bloc's leaders agreed to relocate some 120,000 asylum seekers from Greece, Italy and Hungary to other EU member countries in an attempt to ease the burden of the union’s frontier states.
