Mexican Embassy in Egypt Issues Tourist Warning After Deadly Shooting

The Egyptian Interior Ministry said earlier that 12 people, including Mexican tourists and their accompanying Egyptian tour guides, had been accidentally shot dead by security forces during an anti-terror raid in the Wahat area of the Western Desert.
"It is necessary to respect and follow the instructions of local [Egyptian] authorities, not to participate in political protests, avoid crowds, especially for political reasons, and unnecessary journeys by car and public transport, particularly at night," the embassy said in a statement.

The Mexican Embassy added that Egypt was going through a difficult process of political and social changes and facing a serious challenge in achieving complete internal and regional stability.

The Western Desert is a popular tourist attraction in Egypt, but is also known as a hideout for militant groups.
