Britain to launch vehicle emissions probe

The British government decided on Thursday to launch its own check on vehicle emissions to ensure that the Volkswagen (VW) test cheating scandal will not reoccur.

After calling for action at a European level, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said in a statement, "The Vehicle Certification Agency, the UK regulator, is working with vehicle manufacturers to ensure that this issue is not industry-wide."

The Vehicle Certification Agency will re-run lab tests on cars where necessary and compare them against real world driving emissions.

"My priority is to protect the public as we go through the process of investigating what went wrong and what we can do to stop it happening again in the future," he added.

• The European Union has also said that there should be a Europe-wide investigation into emissions testing.

Volkswagen has admitted manipulated emissions tests in Europe in the same way it rigged results in the US, the German government said on Thursday.
