South Korea & North Korea to hold talks over loudspeaker broadcasts

South and North Korea have agreed to hold top-level talks as a North Korean deadline loomed for Seoul to halt loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts across the border or face military action.

Four high-ranking officials will meet at the border truce village of Panmunjon at 6pm (10am Irish time), a spokeswoman for the presidential Blue House in Seoul.

The agreement over the dialogue came just hours before the North's ultimatum on the cross-border broadcasts expires at 5pm Pyongyang time.

The South side will be represented by Unification Minister Hong Young-Pyo and the head of the National Security Office Kim Kwan-Jin.

The North will send its military's top political official, Hwang Pyong-So, who is widely seen as leader Kim Jong-Un's number two, and Worker's Party Secretary Kim Yong-Gon, who is in charge of relations with the South.

  2. North and South Korea hold talks go into a second day...

North and South Korea are to hold a second round of top-level talks on Sunday to defuse growing tension, officials from the South say.

The announcement was made after several hours of negotiations on Saturday.

Senior aides to the two countries' leaders met at the Panmunjom truce village on the border.

North Korea had threatened "strong military action" if the South did not stop border loudspeaker broadcasts that had provoked a "semi-state of war".

The two sides have agreed to meet again on Sunday afternoon to "narrow down differences" as overnight talks were finally wound up after nearly 10 hours of negotiations......BBC
