Serbian leader criticizes Hungary for migrant border fence

Serbia's prime minister has denounced neighboring Hungary's razor-wire border fence to stop migrants, comparing it to Nazi-era concentration camps.

Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic spoke as he talked to migrants from the Middle East, Africa and Asia who were camping Wednesday in a Belgrade park.

He said Serbia has no plans to build fences on its border even though it is being overwhelmed by the flood of migrants.

Vucic says "we won't build those wires, those barbed wires. It only takes for someone to switch the electricity through those wires and to finish the job."

Serbia, on the main transit route for migrants who want to reach Western Europe, fears when the fence is completed, it will leave thousands of people stranded inside the Balkan country.

  •  "Serbia will build neither border walls, nor migrant camps"

Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic says Serbia will not build a wall along the border with FYROM*** to stem the tide of migrants crossing into the country.

Serbia will also not build migrant camps on its territory, he told the Belgrade-based daily Danas.

  • According to Dacic, the flow of migrants from the Middle East on their way to Hungary will "redirect to Croatia and Bulgaria."

"I don't believe that Serbia will make a decision to, at some moment, like Hungary (on the border with Serbia) build a wall on the border with FYROM*** in order to prevent the entry of refugees and migrants to our country," he told the paper.

Asked "how Serbia will behave and what measures it will take if the Hungarian wall leads to refugees and migrants, who are trying to reach the EU via Serbia, staying longer here," Dacic said that this will "not occur," as migrants "know where they can go and pass through in order to reach their desired destination."

"Consequentially that means that Serbia will not have to build migrant camps, because an increase in their number is not expected once the border with Hungary has finally been closed," Dacic said, and added that refugees "will head toward Croatia and Bulgaria" because of the wall.

  1. Hungary moves to secure border as migrants stream in...

Hungary outlined plans on Wednesday to send the army, mounted police and dogs to its southern border to confront record numbers of migrants streaming into the European Union, many fleeing war in Syria.

Unrest flared briefly at a crowded reception center in the border region of Roszke, with a police spokesman saying tear gas had been fired.

Police said a record 2,533 migrants – most of them from Syria, Afghanistan and Pakistan – were caught entering Hungary from Serbia on Tuesday. Another 1,300 were detained just by 9.30 a.m. (0330 EDT) on Wednesday.

More will have passed unnoticed, walking through gaps in an unfinished barrier to a Europe groping for answers to its worst refugee crisis since World War Two.

Hungary, which is part of Europe’s Schengen passport-free travel zone, is building a fence along its 175-km (110-mile) border with Serbia in a bid to keep them out.

Government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs said parliament would debate next week whether to deploy the army...........reuters.com
