Karabakh Army Prevents Azeri Raid on Eastern Border

YEREVAN (ARKA)—The Karabakh Defense Army prevented Azeri troops from launching a raid on Thursday night on the eastern border with Azerbaijan, the press office of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic’s Ministry of Defense reported.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:40AM local time. According to reports, the forefront divisions of the Karabakh Defense Army noticed the advancement of 20-25 Azeri troops.

Karabakh forces repelled them back to their original positions. No losses were suffered by the Karabakh army, according to the report.

Azeri troops violated the ceasefire agreement about 110 times on Thursday night, having fired over 2,000 shots and launched 35 mortars.

On Friday, August 28, President Bako Sahakyan called a meeting of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Security Council. Issues related the celebrations of the 24th anniversary of Karabakh’s independence proclamation and the situation along the line of contact with Azerbaijan were on the agenda of the meeting, the Central Information Department of the Office of the President reported.

Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Aghabekyan and Defense Minister Levon Mnatsakanyan delivered corresponding reports on Friday.

The President gave instructions to the government on the proper implementation of the activities concerning the issues discussed.

“We look forward to bringing the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan together at the UN General Assembly in September and exchange views on the way forward on a negotiated settlement.  We need a renewed commitment at the highest level to finding a peaceful resolution of the conflict,” US Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group James Warlick told APA on Friday.

He said the Minsk Group Co-Chairs are planning to visit the region in the fall, although no specific dates are set.
