Czech leaders ask EU to strengthen protection of its outer border

Czech President Milos Zeman, Senate chairman Milan Stech and the Chamber of Deputies chairman Jan Hamacek said after a joint meeting on Tuesday that the EU should strengthen the protection of its outer border.

Stech and Hamacek said if the measures do not help, the Czech Republic should strengthen its own borders due to the migration crisis that the country is facing.

  • Hamacek said they have agreed that the only possible long-term solution is to strengthen the protection of the external borders of the European Union, strengthen the Frontex mission.

They said that it is also necessary to be prepared for the situation that the measures did not lead to the desired results, then the adequate national measures is necessary to be prepared.

  • According to Stech and Hamacek, the measures include the deployment of its military.

  • Stech said they have agreed that there is indeed a need to concentrate forces to pressure the European Union to create a uniform policy that is efficient and effective to keep the refugees from leaving their countries.

If it does not work, according to him, there will be no choice but significantly enhance the protection of the Czech border, perhaps in the form of extraordinary military exercises.

Hamacek expressed his belief that the Czech Republic still manages to cope with the increased migration. He said he could see some space for improvement, for example in providing health care for refugees.
