China and Russia hold joint drill in Sea of Japan

A marine drill jointly held by China and Russia started today over several sea areas, including the Sea of Japan.

The nine-day drill will be carried out by 23 warships, two submarines, 15 aircraft, eight ship-borne helicopters, 400 marines and 30 amphibious equipments will jointly perform air defense, anti-submarine warfare, anti-warship warfare and landing drills over several of sea areas, including the Peter the Great Gulf and the Sea of Japan.

According to Zhang Junshe, a researcher at the PLA Naval Military Studies Research Institute, this is a drill which will last for a long period and cover a large sea area. It is the first time that the two countries have included a joint landing exercise in the drill, even though landing is a fundamental task for the navy in military exercises.

Zhang reiterated that this is not the first time that the joint military drill has been conducted over the Sea of Japan. The enlarged scope of the drill will give the navy a better idea of the changing conditions of the areas so that their abilities to carry out missions in far-flung areas can be enhanced.

According to the Ministry of National Defense, the joint drill is based on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership of Coordination between the two countries to tackle with the danger threatening the security of the sea areas.

The ministry also emphasized that the drill does not target any third party nor does it relate to regional issues.

Twenty-two combat ships of Russia and China will take part in the second phase of a large-scale naval exercise Joint Sea 2015 off the Far Eastern city of Vladivostok, a deputy commander of the Russian Navy, Vice-Admiral Alexander Fedotenkov, said on Thursday.

"This year the scope of the exercise is unprecedented," Fedotenov noted, saying that 20 aircraft, more than 500 amphibious soldiers and 40 pieces of armored vehicles would also take part.

"After this exercise, we will get to a new level of operational coordination, compatibility of headquarters and exchange of experience," the deputy commander said.

  3. Russia-China drills aimed at safeguarding post-war international order...

The large-scale Russia-China naval drills dubbed Joint Sea 2015 are aimed at preserving the post-war international order rather than at creating a military alliance, the Global Times has reported.

The West’s concerns that Russia and China are using the exercises to "flex their military muscles to counter the US and Japan" is misconception, the authors of the report say.

"China and Russia have launched the drills to cope with maritime security threats and have no intention to target the US-Japan alliance," it stresses. "Military collaboration is one dimension of China-Russia cooperation but some countries have drawn the conclusion that the two sides are stepping up efforts to forge an alliance."

The largest joint naval drills are split into two phases, the first of which was held in May, shortly after Russia’s Red Square military parade, and the other is being held now just a few days before China’s military parade in Tiananmen Square.............http://tass.ru/en/world/815977
