Car bomb blast at police facility heard across Greater Cairo

A huge car bomb explosion in front of National Security premises in Qaliubiya's Shubra El-Kheima district was heard all across Greater Cairo in the early hours of Thursday.

No deaths have been reported so far while at least eight were injured in the terrorist attack, said Ahmed El-Ansary, head of Egypt's ambulance authority. The interior ministry says six policemen were injured.

A driver parked the car bomb in front of the police building then escaped upon riding a motorcycle that followed him, according to a statement issued by the interior ministry on Facebook.

The parked car was remotely detonated as perpetrators are still at large, with security forces searching the area to capture them.

The explosion has damaged buildings and vehicles in the area and shattered window panes, a security source told Al-Ahram's Arabic website.

Shubra El-Kheima district, where the explosion took place, is located north of Cairo and is considered part of Greater Cairo. On social media, residents from different Cairo districts say the blast was pretty loud.

Egypt has witnessed waves of bomb attacks primarily targeting policemen and police facilities since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

No militant group has claimed responsibility for the Shubra El-Kheima attack thus far.

Islamist militants claimed responsibility for a host of bombings over the past two years, including IS-affiliated Sinai Province group, formerly known as Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis.

The previous bomb attack that was heard all across Cairo was on 24 January, 2014 when a car bomb went off in front of the Cairo Security Directorate, killing four and destroying the building facade. Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis claimed responsibility for it.

  1. Blasts near government buildings rock Egypt's Cairo...

Police officers are among six people wounded by a car-bomb attack in front of a police building in Cairo, according to Egyptian's interior ministry.

The blast struck northern Cairo's district of Shubra al-Khaima in the middle of Wednesday night.

There were no immediate reports of deaths from the explosion, which tore the facade off the building.

For blocks around the blast site in the popular residential neighbourhood, glass from blown-out windows could be seen on the street.

"A man suddenly stopped his car in front of the state security building, jumped out of it and fled on a motorbike that followed the car," the interior ministry statement said on Thursday morning.

"The car exploded wounding six policemen."

Earlier a security official told AFP news agency that "an attack targeted a state security building" while state TV said three bombs exploded in the vicinity of the same building.

  3. ISIS affiliate claims Cairo bombing in purported statement...

A statement apparently issued by ISIS affiliate in Egypt claims responsibility for a massive car bomb that struck a security building in Cairo, wounding six police.

The statement said the bombing early Thursday was to avenge the execution of six convicted militants. The death sentences were carried out in May.

The statement said the "soldiers of the caliphate" targeted the building north of Cairo with a parked car bomb.

It was not immediately possible to verify the statement, which was circulated by ISIS supporters online and by the U.S.-based SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadi websites.

The ISIS affiliate, which refers to itself as the Sinai Province, has carried out major attacks in the past, mainly targeting security forces
