  1. US military 'starts training Syrian rebels' to counter IS group...

The US military has started training Syrian fighters to combat Islamic State group militants, government officials for the US and Middle East announced on Thursday.

Jordanian government spokesperson, Mohammad al-Momani, confirmed that the program had begun “several days ago”, while US Defense Secretary Ash Carter also issued a statement confirming the commencement of training.

Carter said that a second group of Syrian fighters will begin training soon.

The US will train and arm a force that is expected to eventually total more than 15,000 troops in a major test of President Barack Obama’s strategy in Syria, which critics say is too limited to steer events.

According to CNN, some 400 rebels out of 3000 applicants have already passed the initial security screening required to attend the training sessions. These sessions will reportedly cover everything from the rules of war to small-arms skills.

The program is also likely to be launched in Turkey, sources told Reuters.

The plan reflects the priorities of an American administration that needs a ground force to complement US air strikes against Islamic State (IS) group in Syria. Congress approved it last year with two primary goals: to fight the IS group and boost the chances of a negotiated settlement in the Syrian war by raising pressure on President Bashar al-Assad’s forces.

    Targeting IS or Assad's forces?

Opposition fighters and some of their backers, including Turkey and Saudi Arabia, say the plan will only succeed if it focuses more directly on fighting Assad’s forces and allied militias.....france24.com
