Indonesia informs foreign drug convicts of execution. Eight foreigners and one Indonesian notified they will face firing squad...

Indonesia has officially notified nine affiliated with the so-called "Bali Nine" drug trafficking ring, including eight foreigners, that they will be executed within days following weeks of delay, but a Frenchman was granted a temporary reprieve after Paris stepped up pressure on Jakarta.

The nine - from Australia, Nigeria, Brazil, Ghana, the Philippines, and Indonesia - have been transported to the high-security prison island of Nusakambangan, where they are set to face a firing squad, despite mounting international criticism.

"Today, just now, we just finished notifying every convict, nine people except for Serge," a spokesman for the attorney-general's office, Tony Spontana, told the AFP news agency, adding it would be at least three days until the sentences are carried out.

Officials said earlier that Frenchman Serge Atlaoui, who was expected to be among the group being put to death, will not be included in the forthcoming batch as he still has an outstanding legal appeal.

Spontana did not give a date for the executions but a lawyer for Filipina Mary Jane Veloso said she had been informed she would be put to death on Tuesday.

Minnie Lopez, a lawyer for Veloso, told AFP: "We were informed by Mary Jane herself that she received the notice that the sentence will be implemented on April 28."

The news that the execution procedure is under way, after weeks of delays, came after Indonesian officials met diplomats Saturday in a town near Nusakambangan. The consular officials then travelled to the island to visit inmates.

The foreign drug convicts have all lost appeals for clemency from President Joko Widodo, who argues that Indonesia is fighting a drugs emergency.

The Australian government said it had been informed that the execution of its citizens, Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan, who were reportedly leaders of the drug trafficking ring, was "imminent".

"Nothing can be gained and much will be lost if these two young Australians are executed," said Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop.

"I again respectfully call on the president of Indonesia to reconsider his refusal to grant clemency. It is not too late for a change of heart."

  1. Australia urges executions halt...

Australia has called on Indonesia to delay executing two convicted Australian drug traffickers until corruption claims are investigated.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said she spoke to her Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsudi late on Sunday.

She said there was still an appeal before Indonesia's Constitutional Court and a separate investigation at the country's Judicial Commission.

Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were convicted in 2006.

The two men, along with six other foreigners and one Indonesian man, have been formally informed of their execution.

Under Indonesian law, convicts must be given 72 hours' notice of execution. This means the executions by the firing squad could be carried out as early as Tuesday.

A French convict, Serge Atlaoui, still has an appeal before the courts. France has warned of "consequences" if the execution goes ahead....bbc.com

  2. Australia can't do more for death row prisoners in Indonesia: foreign minister...

Australia's foreign minister on Tuesday defended Prime Minister Tony Abbott against online criticism that he had not done enough to save the lives of two Australians on death row in Indonesia.

The Australians, Myuran Sukumaran, 33, and Andrew Chan, 31, are among nine drug traffickers who were given 72-hour notices over the weekend that they will be executed by a firing squad.

Australian actors, including Geoffrey Rush, Guy Pearce, Joel Edgerton and Bryan Brown, have launched an online video calling for Indonesia to show mercy to the two Australians.

"Tony, if you have any courage and compassion, you'd get over to Indonesia and bring these two boys home," actor Brendan Cowell said to the prime minister.

But Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said the Australian government was acting on advice from Australian diplomats in Jakarta who were part of a sustained campaign seeking a stay of execution.

"Clearly if travelling to Indonesia would make a difference, we would have gone there," Bishop told Nine Network television.

Abbott had spoken to Indonesian President Joko Widodo several times on the issue, most recently in Singapore in late March at the funeral of the city-state's first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew,....ctvnews.ca

  3. Indonesia drugs prisoners have final moments with family...

A group of prisoners due to be executed for drugs offences in Indonesia have spent what are believed to be their final moments with their families.

Relatives of Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were visibly distressed. Sukumaran's sister collapsed and had to be carried.

Chan, Sukumaran and seven others are expected to be executed by firing squad as early as Tuesday night local time.

A French national still has his appeal under review.

Indonesia has some of the world's toughest drug laws, but Jakarta has justified this due to the country's own drugs problem - 33 Indonesians die every day as a result of drugs, according to Indonesia's National Narcotics Agency.

Australian media reported that families of Chan and Sukumaran were given about five hours to say their goodbyes, and that the men had been denied their own choice of spiritual adviser in their final hours, instead being given Christian guides nominated by the authorities...
