Obama: Iran must halt nuclear work for a decade

U.S. President Barack Obama said on Monday that Iran should commit to a verifiable freeze of at least 10 years on its nuclear activity for a landmark atomic deal to be reached, but said the odds were still against sealing a final agreement.

In an interview with Reuters at the White House, Obama said that a rift over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's planned speech to Congress opposing the Iran deal on Tuesday was a distraction that would not be "permanently destructive" to U.S. Israeli ties.

But he said there was a "substantial disagreement" between his administration and the Israeli government over how to achieve their shared goal of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

"If, in fact, Iran is willing to agree to double-digit years of keeping their program where it is right now and, in fact, rolling back elements of it that currently exist ... if we've got that, and we've got a way of verifying that, there's no other steps we can take that would give us such assurance that they don't have a nuclear weapon," he said.................Reuters............http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2015/03/03/Obama-Iran-must-halt-nuclear-work-for-at-least-a-decade.html

  1. An aide to U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday called on Congress not to impose new sanctions on Iran, warning that such a move could derail ongoing talks on Tehran's nuclear program...

Additional sanctions enacted during the negotiation would blow up the talks, divide the international community and cause the U.S. to be blamed for the failure to reach a deal, National Security Advisor Susan Rice said at the annual policy conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

"Congress has played a hugely important role in helping to build our sanctions on Iran, but they shouldn't play the spoiler now," Rice said.

Rice's remarks came one day ahead of a controversial speech to Congress by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is expected to reiterate his objections to the talks on Iran's nuclear program. Rice has blasted Netanyahu's plans to address Congress as "destructive" to the fabric of the U.S.-Israeli relationship.................http://www.china.org.cn/world/2015-03/03/content_34935832.htm

  2. Iran and the United States Tuesday returned to the negotiating table for a second day of talks, as a political storm over the issue unfolded thousands of miles away in Washington...

By the shores of Lake Geneva in the town of Montreux, US Secretary of State John Kerry met with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif as they try to pin down a political framework for a deal to rein in Tehran's nuclear programme by a March 31 deadline.

US officials said they began their talks at 9:33 am (0833 GMT).

After months of discussions, the two men launched this latest round of talks on Monday, and are due to continue negotiating until Wednesday afternoon, when Kerry will fly to Riyadh to meet King Salman.

Few details of the emerging deal have publicly come to light so far, but aides to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have threatened that may change when the Israeli leader makes a controversial address to the US Congress later Tuesday............http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/124348.aspx

  3. Iran calls Obama's 10-year nuclear demand 'unacceptable' ...

(Reuters) - Iran on Tuesday rejected as "unacceptable" U.S. President Barack Obama's demand that it freeze sensitive nuclear activities for at least 10 years, but said it would continue talks aimed at securing a deal, Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported.

"Iran will not accept excessive and illogical demands," Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was quoted as saying by Fars.

"Obama’s stance ... is expressed in unacceptable and threatening phrases ... ," he reportedly said, adding that negotiations underway in Switzerland would nonetheless carry on.

Zarif and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry sat down for a second day of meetings hours after Obama had told Reuters that Iran must commit to a verifiable halt of at least 10 years on sensitive nuclear work for a landmark atomic deal to be reached......................http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/03/03/us-iran-nuclear-usa-idUSKBN0LZ0YU20150303?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews
