Jewish cemetery vandalized in Hungary

A Jewish cemetery in Hungary was vandalized over the weekend, Hungarian media reported on Sunday.

Unknown assailants damaged some 15 to 20 graves in the northern city of Gyongyos. Peter Weisz, President of the Jewish community in Gyongyos, said body remains were scattered in the graveyard. While the full extent of the damage was still being assessed, Weisz said the vandalism was "unprecedented."

The perpetrators also caused damage to property surrounding the cemetery fence.

This is not the first time the site has been targeted. Back in 2013, it was the subject of a similar attack. Police on Sunday said they were looking into the incident, promising to keep the public informed as an investigation proceeded.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban condemned the violence, calling it a "barbaric act" and Deputy State Secretary Csaba Latorcai vowed to take action against such attacks.
