Jordan didn't withdraw UN draft resolution to lift arms embargo on Libya (Egypt)

Egypt's foreign ministry denied on Sunday news reports that Jordan withdrew a draft resolution Amman submitted on Wednesday to the Security Council which proposes a lifting of a four-year arms embargo on the Libya.
Egypt has publicly called on the UN to lift the embargo on Libya after Islamic State (IS) group militants recently beheaded 20 Coptic Egyptians on a Tripoli beach.

On Monday, Egypt launched airstrikes on IS group targets in Libya's Derna, in coordination with the Libyan army.
The Security Council is set to hold further discussions on the draft resolution Monday, Egypt's foreign affairs ministry press communiqué read.
  • Members of the Security Council have been revising the wording of a possible resolution, the communiqué added.
  • The United States and United Kingdom have rejected military intervention in Libya calling for a political solution.
Both the UK and the US hold veto power in the Security Council.
In February 2011, the UN imposed the embargo against Libya citing “violent repression of civilian demonstrators” by former president Muammar Gaddafi.
Since then, power plays have shifted in Libya but conflict remains a constant.
Islamist-led rebels have been battling General Haftar's forces across the country for months.

  1. Sisi tries to reassure Egyptians despite host of challenges...

(Reuters) - President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi sought to reassure Egyptians on Sunday that he is in control and steering the country on the right path in the face of Islamist militancy in neighboring Libya and the Sinai and economic challenges.

Sisi's speech was broadcast on prime time television and was interspersed with clips of him greeting leaders of wealthy Gulf Arab states, Western powers and Egyptian army officers.

His comments came after Islamic State militants beheaded up to 21 Egyptian Christians in neighboring Libya -- bloodshed that provoked Egyptian airstrikes -- and one of the worst attacks on security forces in the Sinai in months. ..............http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/02/22/us-egypt-sisi-idUSKBN0LQ0S020150222?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

  2. Egypt's Sisi defends Libya strikes; lauds Gulf support...

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi on Sunday defended his country's recent airstrikes against the targets of a militant group in neighboring Libya and lauded financial support from oil-rich Gulf countries.

"Our army does not commit aggressions against anybody," al-Sisi said in a recorded televised address to the nation.

"We did not invade another country, but were defending the Egyptian people," he added.

Egypt sent its fighter jets to neighboring Libya on Feb. 16 to strike targets of a group affiliated with the militant Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), only hours after the militants posted a video showing the beheading of 20 Egyptian Christians it had kidnapped in the restive North African country earlier.

Al-Sisi said the strikes targeted 13 ISIL sites in Libya, noting that the Egyptian military had thoroughly considered and gathered enough information about the targets...............http://www.aa.com.tr/en/news/469217--egypts-sisi-defends-libya-strikes-lauds-gulf-support

Libya's internationally recognized Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni said his government would stop dealing with Turkey as it was sending weapons to a rival group in Tripoli so "the Libyan people kill each other", ramping up his rhetoric against Ankara.
