The decision, announced on Thursday, came in light of a request by a MP to rule on the constitutionality of the June 25 vote that led to the creation of Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni's government.
The court's decision, which sets the stage for more political chaos in the divided country, casts shadows on the future of al-Thinni's government that was fighting armed groups, as it sought to restore law and order in the North African oil-rich country.
According to Al Jazeera's correspondent Mahmoud Abdul-Wahed, who reports from Tripoli, the ruling renders al-Thinni's government "unconstitutional."
Al-Thinni and his government, isolated in the far east city of Tobruk near the Egyptian borders, had close to no control over Libya's three main cities.
- Meanwhile, armed groups are in control of the capital Tripoli, where a rival Islamist-dominated parliament remains in place despite an expired mandate.
- Recent violence between warring sides have claimed hundreds of lives in the past few weeks.

ReplyDeleteDer Oberste Gerichtshof Libyens hat das gewählte und international anerkannte Parlament des Landes für verfassungswidrig erklärt. Fraglich ist aber, ob der Gerichtshof tatsächlich unabhängig und unbeeinflusst entscheiden konnte. In der Hauptstadt Tripolis, dem Sitz des Gerichtes, herrscht seit August die Miliz "Operation Morgenröte" aus der Küstenstadt Misrata. Sie hat ein eigenes Parlament eingesetzt und die Behörden unter ihre Kontrolle gestellt.
Das gewählte Parlament tagt wegen der hochproblematischen Sicherheitslage in der Hauptstadt im weit entfernten Tobruk nahe der Grenze zu Ägypten. Es hatte eine Regierung ernannt, die den Kampf gegen islamistische Milizen organisieren soll. Ein Sprecher des Abgeordnetenhauses lehnte eine Stellungnahme zu dem Urteil ab.
