Examining the ridiculous paranoia of US war hawks

In late-November, the Halifax International Security Forum, organized by a US-based non-governmental, non-profit, and non-partisan group, convened in Canada. Peter Van Praagh, president of the forum, declared at the opening ceremony that China is an opposite force of world civilization. He stated that, together with Russia and the Islamic State (IS), it threatens the future of the world.

The US is carrying out a three-year-long plan to strike IS in the Middle East, leading the NATO countries imposing sanctions and military threats on Russia, and advancing its containment strategy and Air-Sea Battle concept targeting China in the Asia-Pacific region.

These moves, combined with the hype of the US congressmen and certain views on the war by the US hawks, reveal the threat of war, which is increasing. The three threats to the world cited by the war hawks were actually caused by the villainy of the US itself.

In the Middle East, the US strongly supported various anti-government armed groups to overthrow the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and some conservative lawmakers even went to the battlefield to work hand-in-hand with them. With the assistance of the US, the IS arose from the flames of Syrian war and gradually grew stronger, recruiting more militants and encroaching many cities and towns, which in turn, hurts the US interests.

In Europe, the US ran counter to its political commitment and vigorously advanced its enlargement strategy, in order to narrow the strategic space of Russia. It succeeded in bringing about changes of the Ukrainian government, but failed in its attempt to coerce Russia with the NATO military alliance: Crimea declared independence from Ukraine, and the fire of war never ceased in Ukraine’s two eastern states. It is hard for the US to extricate itself from such messes.

In the Asia-Pacific region, the US launched its 'Pivot to Asia' strategic shift to contain the rise of China. It preferred forming factions and cliques and reinforced its military alliance in the region. Its interference exacerbated the security situation in the East China Sea and South China Sea. It even brazenly raised the Air-Sea Battle concept in an attempt to disturb China’s peaceful development with military advantages and warfare.

  • Although China and the US agreed to build 'a new type of relationship between major countries,' the latter’s hostility towards China cannot be dispelled.
  • Once the US war hawks are in power and the situation escalates, severe damage will be brought to people in both countries and the world at large.
Under such circumstance, China should adhere to its commitment to safeguarding world peace and stability, work for a stable surrounding environment, and highlight development and security worldwide. Under the framework of “One Belt, One Road,” China should build consensus on revitalization, help hinterland countries in Europe and Asia to develop, and cultivate an anti-war environment in these regions. It should also make good use of the cooperation mechanism of the BRICS countries, work actively to build a solid triangle of Asia, Africa, and Latin America, so as to seek common progress of the developing countries in these continents, and create a favorable environment for world peace.
