Relatives of Russian journalists killed in Ukraine appeal to Strasbourg court

Relatives of two Russian journalists from the VGTRK TV corporation, killed in Ukraine, have appealed to the European Court of Human Rights demanding that those behind the killings be found.

The mother of video engineer Anton Voloshin, Irina, said she hoped for a fair investigation as well as punishment not only for Ukrainian female pilot Nadezhda Savchenko, charged with involvement in their killing, but for all those who had unleashed and supported that war.

“I expect justice. All those who are responsible for this must be held accountable. Also (President Petro) Poroshenko, as it was his army that was committing outrages there,” she said.

In early July, the Russian Investigative Committee charged Nadezhda Savchenko with involvement in murder of two reporters, who worked for the Russian VGTRK TV corporation in Ukraine.

Russian investigators said Savchenko, who was arrested in summer after penetrating the Russian territory illegally, joined the Aidar battalion during combat operations near the eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk in June.

Locating the positions of the Russian TV crew and other civilians near Luhansk, she passed them on to the military that opened mortar fire on the group of people killing the Russian reporters, Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin, in mid-June.
